Safety Netting
Providing confidence while working at height.
Safety Nets are used to minimise potential harm while working at heights.
Aspiring Safe Sites is a Fall Arrest Safety Equipment Training (FASET) qualified installer. Safety Nets are a collective fall arrest system which provides passive protection from falls while allowing people to work at height without restriction of movement. Safety nets also reduce the likelihood of dropped materials or tools injuring workers below.
Currently there are no New Zealand standards for safety netting, although WORKSAFENZ do have ‘best practice guidelines’. These guidelines follow British and European codes of practice and standards. All nets are compliant to BS EN1263-1:2002 and are independently tested every 12 months for UV degradation monitoring. All Aspiring Safe Site nets are 4.5mm knotless type S square mesh nets.
Netting is installed after the frames have been braced. Safety Netting is installed directly below the working platform, typically fixed to the top plate. The rigged area is fully inspected prior to a verbal handover and a Handover Certificate is issued. The Handover Certificate details installation, conditions of use, reinspection requirements, and a rescue plan.
Both The Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and New Zealand Building Code outline the obligations for PCBU (Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking). Further information here.

Health and Safety at Work Act 2015
Section 36 and 37 outlines the duty of care for a PCBU (Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking) to ensure the health and safety of anyone affected by the business or undertaking. Duties are to be performed as far as ‘reasonably practicable’. If there is the potential for a person to fall from any height then all reasonably practicable steps should be implemented to prevent injury.
